Mustafa El-Aougi
Born in Tyre, in 1929, Mustafa El-Aougi spent most of his childhood and teenage years in Tripoli where he completed his education at the French Mission.
He then attended law school in Beirut, where he obtained a law degree in 1950 from Saint-Joseph University, immediately followed by a second one from the Lebanese University in 1951.
Although newly named Single Judge in Beirut, an opportunity that allowed him to pursue his studies in Paris in 1952, and defend his thesis at the Sorbonne University in 1953, thus obtaining his doctorate in law.
While specializing in criminal sciences and comparative law, he attended in 1954 both the Sorbonne University as well as the University of Brussels, earning a diploma in each discipline.
Upon returning to Beirut, he resumed his work as a Single Judge until he was appointed as a consulting judge to the Court of First Instance in 1959. He remained in this function until 1969, when he was promoted consulting judge to the Court of Cassation. During this mandate, he pursued for one year his studies at the University of Dallas in the United States, where he received a diploma in comparative Anglo-Saxon law in 1960.
Despite being very busy, he married Marlène who was a precious support to him throughout his career. They had two children, Marwan and Mona, born in 1964 and 1968 respectively.
In 1983, he was appointed president over the 6th civil chamber of the Court of Cassation, a function that he would occupy until his retirement in 1997.
His retirement, however, was brief as he was named, a month later, a member of the Lebanese Constitutional Council, a responsibility that would compel him to serve as vice-president for two terms.
His profession was not limited to that of a magistrate, as he developed a strong passion for teaching early on in his career. His teaching career spanned five decades, from 1959 to 2007, as he was a professor at the Lebanese University as well as the University of Saint Joseph, where, on a quasi-continuous basis, he taught various subjects that focused on penal law, as well as civil and private law.
He was able to contribute for an extended period of time to the training of future magistrates at the Lebanese Institute of Judicial Studies. He also regularly taught in the doctoral program of Sociology at the Arab University of Beirut.
In 1962, along with his functions as magistrate and professor, the United Nations requested his judicial expertise, which led him to visit legal institutions and organizations all over the globe, as part of several UN mandates.
As of 1978, he sat in numerous committees for the prevention of crime. He also became the founding member of the administrative committee of the Arab Center for Security Research in Riyadh.
From 1989 and onwards, he represented Lebanon in many conferences on crime prevention and prison administration, and was handed assignments on social rehabilitation, including one that would last from 1992 to 1995 in an Egyptian penitentiary center, where he faced the challenge of educating young offenders by teaching them a trade.
In addition to these monumental achievements, he authored fifteen reference books in both penal and civil law as well as criminology and sociology, thus covering all the disciplines that he had taught throughout his life.
On March 22nd, 2012, Mustapha El-Aougi passed away at the age of 83, surrounded by his loved ones.
